Julia Luz Betancourt (she/they) is Counterstream's assistant editor and an investigative reporter covering how communities organize against abuses of power. As Counterstream's in-house journalist, she reports for Peace & Riot, our social media, and our weekly newsletter, The Stream.
Julia's reporting centers how the most marginalized people are impacted by and responding to injustice in every layer of society. In addition to Counterstream and Peace & Riot, her work has been published by Prism, BreakThrough News, YES! Magazine, Truthout, and more. Before joining Counterstream in 2025, she was the associate editor at YES! Media, where she covered political power and activism.
Julia holds a Bachelor's degree in journalism and critical race and ethnic studies. She is originally from New York and currently lives in New Jersey.
