Julia Luz Betancourt (she/they) is Counterstream's assistant editor and an investigative reporter covering how communities organize against abuses of power. As Counterstream's in-house journalist, she authors the weekly newsletter, produces social media content, and provides original reporting for Peace & Riot.
Julia's stories center how the most marginalized people are impacted by and responding to injustice in every layer of society. In addition to Counterstream and Peace & Riot, her work has been published by Prism, BreakThrough News, YES! Magazine, Truthout, and more. She has worked on global and national media teams, helping newsrooms and media organizations more deeply engage audiences. She was formerly the associate editor at YES! Media, where she covered political power and grew the organization's newsletter base and social media following.
Julia holds a Bachelor's degree in journalism and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies. Her stories center how the most marginalized people are impacted by and responding to injustice in every layer of society.
