Who We Are
Counterstream Media is a nonprofit media organization that uses journalism and storytelling to work toward climate and environmental justice. Our stories center the people most heavily impacted by environmental injustice and challenge harmful narratives that let polluters off the hook. We combine hard data with the stories and lived experiences from Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, low-income communities, and other historically marginalized groups. Our work reveals where climate, environmental, racial, and social justice intersect.
What We Do
Through our podcasts, publications, and live storytelling events, we cover frontline voices and influence how culture and policy take shape. Here's what we're known for:
- Top-rated podcast: A People’s Climate, hosted by Co-Founder and President Shilpi Chhotray, executive produced by Head of Creative Mindy Ramaker, and distributed with The Nation, features climate conversations about grassroots action that puts power back in the hands of the people.
- People-first journalism: Peace & Riot, our climate and environmental justice zine led by Editor Kate Weiner and Editor-in-Chief Mindy Ramaker, publishes interviews, photography, and art that spotlight climate leadership where it actually lives — in communities, on the frontlines, and in the culture.
- Story Salons: Our live storytelling events produced by Head of Partnerships Chess Jakobs convene frontline organizers, journalists, artists and community leaders to hear and share stories about building a just future — on their own terms.
